Managing Government Projects

Overview

This course provides a framework for successfully managing a project in the public sector. It provides the skills and knowledge necessary to define, plan, implement and complete a project. The issues of scoping, stakeholder analysis, risk assessment and quality assurance are also included. This course is not software-based. Instead, a typical project is used as the basis for learning, and an experiential exercise reinforces the concepts. Participants with no prior knowledge of project management will find this a very useful introduction, but those with some experience will also benefit from the framework, knowledge and skills presented.

Course Content

The course content explores what a project is, what project management is, and why projects fail. It defines the project, including stakeholder analysis, milestones, deliverables and risk management. It covers planning tools like Gantt charts and PERT charts, and outlines a useful process to follow. It addresses implementation issues such as quality assurance, monitoring of progress and performance, and what to do when problems arise. Finally, it discusses completion of a project - wrapping it up and evaluating it.
